Peer to peer networking is one of the greatest tools that the internet has provided for its users. Music enthusiasts, hobbyists, and movie lovers can download movies and share media files from others from across the world. There are plenty of advantages to this, and up until now, some o the major players in the peer to peer networking industry have been Kazaa, as well as Shareaza and LimeWire. Of course, all of these programs are free to users even though piracy is considered a crime by the MPAA. But downloading music and other media files by using Bit Torrent, or torrents for short, has revolutionized the way that users can get a hold of this type of information.

What Torrents Are

The main thing that one should know about what Torrents are is that they are a basic tool to enable users to get a hold of information quick. Bit Torrent actually allows computer users to download multiple “bits” from more than one source at a time. For example, if you are downloading a movie or a song, then that movie or song would be broken down into “bits.” These bits are transferred from multiple other users’ computers who are currently using the Bit Torrent network.

The basic principle of torrents are much different from those of Kazaa or LimeWire because they allow the music or other media files to be chopped up and downloaded from different sources. On the other hand, Kazaa, LimeWire, and other programs like these, only allow you to connect to one source at a time, thus providing for a slower downloading speed. Torrents actually have quite a large downloading speed to begin with. Many of them download at a rate of more than five megabytes per minute and there are even more ways to increase your speeds as well.

Increasing Torrent Downloading Speed

There are actually a couple things that will enable you to have your bit torrents download at a greater speed. The first is to have yourself available to share the songs and media files that you have on your computer that you’ve downloaded from the bit torrent world. In fact, there are torrent trolls that will punish you with a slower downloading speed if you have decided to keep all of the media files for yourself instead of sharing.

However, there is another thing that you can do to have an increased bit torrent speed as well. That would be to tell the bit torrent program what port to use for downloading. By default, torrents search for port 6881, but work up until 6999 to be able to download media files. However, if you are able to forward the port by yourself to 6881 you will benefit from it with greater downloading speeds.

Another Vote for Bit Torrents!

There is another reason why bit torrents are so much better than regular peer-to-peer networking programs, though. This is that there are virtually no ads and no advertising that comes with bit torrent programs. What this really means is that users will enjoy an uninterrupted downloading time without spyware or adware. Additionally, bit torrents scour everything that comes to the network before it’s downloaded by a user to make sure it’s not filled with something that it’s not supposed to be.

Altogether, using bit torrents to download any type of media file is what many people have resorted to. Not only are bit torrent files, songs, and movies “cleaner” than other programs, but users can enjoy a true peer-to-peer file sharing world that is incredible faster!

With the increase of internet speeds in recent years it’s hardly surprising that this ‘torrent’ technology has grown as big as it has. I can somewhat understand the method behind torrents but at the end of the day, its not re-inventing the wheel and I genuinely don’t believe it can take over other P2P systems such as LimeWire, Kazaa etc.

I am using LimeWire for my download needs at this moment.

I feel that BitTorrent is closest to Usenet, which is best suited to newer files, Obscure or older files tend to not be available.
